DWG viewer for Android: open DWG files without an app
You can use this DWG viewer for Android without installing a DWG app: open the page in Chrome, pick the .dwg, and it renders on the phone. It handles small and medium drawings well; very large files may run out of memory on a phone. Nothing is uploaded.
Do you need a DWG app for Android?
For a quick look at a drawing someone sent on WhatsApp or email, no. Chrome on Android supports WebAssembly and WebGL, which is all this viewer needs, so the file opens in a tab with no Play Store visit and no account. Samsung Internet and Firefox for Android work the same way.
An installed app makes sense when you need to work offline on site, mark up drawings and send them back, or open the same project folder every day. Those apps are listed further down. For viewing, measuring, and exporting a PDF, the browser is enough.
A note on what 'app' means here: a browser tab is not an icon on the home screen, but Chrome's menu has Add to Home screen, and after that the viewer opens with one tap like any other app, still with nothing installed from the store.
How it works on a phone
The DWG is converted to DXF and rendered entirely on the phone's CPU and GPU. That is what keeps it private, but it also means the phone's memory is the ceiling. A site plan of a few megabytes is fine. A 40 MB survey with thousands of hatches may make Chrome drop the tab, and DWG files over 60 MB are skipped outright. The first DWG in a session also pulls a 9 MB WebAssembly module, so give it a moment on mobile data.
Memory depends on what the drawing contains, not only its size on disk. A 5 MB file packed with hatches and splines costs more to render than a 15 MB file that is mostly plain lines, so treat file size as a rough guide only.
When a drawing is too heavy for the phone, the practical options are to open it on a laptop, ask the sender for a PDF export, or try the tips in how to open large DWG files.
Touch controls and tools
Pinch to zoom, drag with one finger to pan, and tap fit to bring the whole drawing back into view. The layers panel works with a tap, so you can hide text and dimensions to make a floor plan readable on a six-inch screen. The measure tool takes two taps and shows the distance in drawing units.
Export PNG saves the current view to the phone's downloads, and export PDF or SVG gives you a vector file you can forward from the share sheet. Print goes through Chrome's print dialog, which on Android can send to a Wi-Fi printer or save as PDF. Both themes work; dark is easier outdoors against glare, light is better for screenshots.
View a DWG file on Android in three steps
- Save the .dwg to the phone (Downloads, Google Drive, or the Files app). Attachments in Gmail or WhatsApp need to be downloaded first.
- Open this page in Chrome and tap the drop zone, then choose the file from the picker.
- Pinch, pan, toggle layers, measure, and export or print.

Which DWG viewer for Android: browser or app?
| Option | Install | Account | Offline | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DWG Viewer (this site) | None, runs in Chrome | No | Page must load once; file stays on device | Looking at one file now, privately |
| AutoCAD mobile app (Autodesk) | Play Store | Autodesk account | Yes, with sync | Daily site work, markup, light editing |
| DWG FastView | Play Store | Optional | Yes | Offline viewing with a free tier |
| Autodesk Viewer (web) | None | Autodesk account | No, uploads the file | Sharing a view link with others |
Pick the app when you need offline access or markup; pick the browser when you need to look at one file now without handing it to a cloud. The mobile DWG viewer page compares phones and tablets more generally.
Privacy on a shared or work phone
Nothing is uploaded: the file is read by JavaScript in the Chrome tab, and closing the tab removes it. That matters on a phone more than on a desktop, because phones are where NDA drawings get opened in a hurry from chat apps. No copy is left in a cloud account, and no sign-in is involved. The file itself stays wherever you saved it, so delete it from Downloads if the drawing should not remain on the device. The only things the viewer writes are the PDF, PNG, or SVG files you choose to export, which Chrome saves to the same Downloads folder.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free DWG viewer for Android?
Yes. This page works in Chrome on Android with no app and no account. DWG FastView and Autodesk's AutoCAD mobile app are free installs with optional paid features.
What is the best DWG viewer for Android?
For occasional viewing, the browser: nothing to install and nothing uploaded. For daily use on site with offline folders and markup, the AutoCAD mobile app from Autodesk is the most complete.
Can I open AutoCAD files on Android without the AutoCAD app?
Yes. AutoCAD files are DWG or DXF, and both open here in Chrome. You only need the app for editing or offline sync.
Why does a large DWG not open on my phone?
Phones have limited memory per browser tab, and a dense DWG can exceed it. Files over 60 MB are skipped by design. Try a tablet or laptop, or ask for a PDF.
Does it work on Android tablets?
Yes, and tablets usually have more memory than phones, so larger drawings open there. Chrome on a tablet is the best mobile setup for this viewer.
