Free DWG viewer: open DWG files online
This free DWG viewer opens AutoCAD DWG and DXF drawings in a browser tab with no account, no watermark, and no trial period. Drop the file on the page and it is read on your device; nothing is sent to a server. Pan, zoom, toggle layers, measure, print, and export to PDF, PNG, or SVG.
What a free DWG viewer should and should not limit
Most tools that call themselves free limit something: exports get a watermark, measuring stops after a trial, or you must create an account before the first file opens. This viewer has none of those gates. There is no sign-up, no install, no watermark on PDF, PNG, or SVG exports, and no time limit.
It does have real limits, and they are worth knowing before you start. It does not open DWF or DWFX files, it never writes a .dwg (so no DXF to DWG, no PDF to DWG, no image to DWG), and DWG files over 60 MB are skipped to protect browser memory. DWG R12 and older drawings open only partially, because the underlying LibreDWG library cannot fully convert them. For everything else, which is nearly every drawing produced since AutoCAD R14, it works.
Free viewers from CAD vendors usually come with a catch of a different kind: they are the on-ramp to a paid product, so the download requires an account and the installer brings the vendor's updater along. That is not sinister, but it is friction, and it is why a page that opens the file in the tab is the quicker answer for a one-off drawing.
What you can do in the free DWG viewer
- Pan, zoom, and fit to view on a WebGL canvas that stays smooth on dense drawings.
- Layers panel: show or hide layers to isolate dimensions, hatches, or a single discipline.
- Measure the distance between two points in drawing units.
- Print through the browser print dialog.
- Export the current view as PNG, or the whole drawing as vector SVG or PDF on an A-series page.
- Light or dark theme, plus an entity count in the status bar so you can tell an empty layout from a failed load.
What it will not do is edit. If you need to move a line or change a note, see how to edit a DWG online for free editors that save back to DWG or DXF.
How to view DWG files for free: three steps
- Open this page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari and drop the .dwg or .dxf file on the drop zone, or click it to pick a file.
- Wait a few seconds. The first DWG in a session downloads a 9 MB WebAssembly module once; after that a typical 1–20 MB drawing opens in 1–10 seconds on a laptop.
- Use the toolbar to fit the drawing, toggle layers, measure, and export or print.
The same steps work on a phone or tablet for small and medium files. Large DWGs can exhaust phone memory, so for anything heavy use a laptop or ask the sender for a PDF version. If the status bar shows zero entities after loading, the file contained nothing the viewer could draw, which usually points to a renamed non-DWG file rather than a viewer problem.
Supported files and versions
| File | Versions | Status |
|---|---|---|
| DWG | AutoCAD R14 through 2018 and newer (AC1014–AC1032) | Opens; converted to DXF on your device with LibreDWG compiled to WebAssembly |
| DWG | R12 and older (AC1009) | Partial; may fail |
| DXF | ASCII and binary, any AutoCAD version | Opens |
| DWF / DWFX | All | Not supported; see DWF viewers |
In a real-world test in October 2026, 14 of 18 user-submitted DWG files opened. The four failures were two non-DWG files renamed to .dwg and two R11/R12 drawings. If your file does not open, this checklist covers the usual causes, and DWG versions explains the AC-codes.
Nothing is uploaded, which matters for NDA drawings
Many online DWG viewers are upload services: the file goes to a server, gets converted there, and a rendered copy comes back. That is a problem when the drawing is covered by an NDA or belongs to a client who never agreed to third-party storage.
Here the file is read by JavaScript inside the browser tab. Conversion and rendering happen on your device, no bytes leave it, and closing the tab removes the drawing. You can confirm this in the browser's network panel: after the page and the WebAssembly module load, there are no outgoing requests carrying your file.

Frequently asked questions
How do I view DWG files for free?
Open this page, drop the .dwg on it, and it renders in the tab. No account, no download, no watermark. Other free routes are Autodesk DWG TrueView on Windows and the Autodesk Viewer website, which requires an Autodesk account.
Is the AutoCAD viewer free?
Autodesk's DWG TrueView and the online Autodesk Viewer are free to use, though both ask for an Autodesk account. This viewer is free with no account at all. AutoCAD itself is a paid product.
Is there a free AutoCAD viewer that does not need installing?
Yes. This browser viewer installs nothing, and Autodesk Viewer also runs in a browser once you sign in and upload the file.
How can I view CAD files for free if they are not DWG?
DXF opens here too. For DWF use Autodesk Design Review; for STEP, IGES, IFC, or Revit files see the CAD viewer page, which lists a free reader for each format.
How do I view CAD drawings free on my phone?
Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone and pick the file, as long as it is small or medium sized. Large drawings can run out of memory on a phone.
