DXF viewer for Mac
This DXF viewer for Mac runs in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox on macOS: drop a .dxf file on the page and it opens with layers, measuring, and export to PDF, PNG, or SVG. It reads DWG too, and it works on Apple silicon and Intel Macs alike, with the file never leaving your computer.
Why a Mac does not open DXF on its own
Double-click a DXF on a Mac and Finder offers to search the App Store, because macOS has no built-in reader for CAD drawings. Preview opens PDFs and images, and Quick Look shows DXF files only as a generic icon. A laser cutter's output or a drawing from a supplier stays a closed box until you add a program.
This page fills that gap without an install. Safari runs the viewer as a web page, so it also works on a managed work Mac where you cannot add apps.
How to open a DXF file on Mac
- Open this page in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox.
- Drag the .dxf from Finder onto the drop area, or click it and choose the file.
- Pinch or scroll on the trackpad to zoom, two-finger drag to pan, and use fit to view to see the whole drawing.
- Toggle layers, measure distances, and export PDF, PNG, or SVG from the toolbar. Print uses the macOS print dialog, where "Save as PDF" is available too.
ASCII and binary DXF in any version open, including R12 files from cutting software. Big drawings are easier on a Mac with more memory, but typical files open in seconds on any recent model.
Mac apps that read DXF
| App | What it does with DXF | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LibreCAD | Opens and edits | Open source, 2D |
| QCAD | Opens and edits | Community edition for DXF |
| Inkscape | Imports and saves | Good for laser and vinyl artwork |
| FreeCAD | Imports and exports | Best when the drawing comes from a 3D part |
| AutoCAD for Mac, other Mac CAD | Full editing | Commercial; worth it for daily drafting |
For viewing and checking a file, a browser page is the quickest. For changing it, see how to edit a DXF file.
Getting a DXF into Keynote, Pages, or a vector app
A DXF is rarely the last stop. On a Mac it usually ends up in a Keynote slide, a Pages report, an email to someone without CAD, or a vector app for cutting. The viewer exports the visible drawing in three forms, each from an area you select with a rectangle:
- PNG at 3000 pixels on the long side, on a white background, sharp enough for a full-screen slide.
- PDF as vector lines, which Preview opens and lets you annotate; the page follows your selection rather than an A4 or Letter sheet.
- SVG as vector paths with one drawing unit per SVG unit, so sizes are easy to check after import into Inkscape.
Hide dimension and construction layers before exporting if the picture is for a client. Exports always use a white page with the layer colors, even when the viewer is in dark mode.
Files stay on your Mac
The DXF is read by JavaScript inside the Safari tab and drawn on your Mac's graphics chip. No copy goes to a server, and closing the tab removes it. That matters for supplier drawings and customer parts covered by an NDA.
DWG files open the same way here; the DWG side is described on DWG viewer for Mac, and the general DXF steps on how to open a DXF file.
Before you send a DXF from your Mac
Measure one known dimension to confirm the units, since DXF files often carry none. Hide layers one at a time to make sure cut lines and engraving are separated. If text looks different from the original, the font is missing on your Mac; the viewer substitutes it, and the recipient's machine may do the same. More about these details is on what is a DXF file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open a DXF file on a Mac?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome and drag the DXF onto it. It opens in the browser without installing an app.
Can Preview open DXF files?
No. Preview reads PDFs and images, not CAD drawings. Use a DXF viewer in the browser or an app such as LibreCAD.
Is there a DXF reader for Mac?
Yes: this browser viewer, plus LibreCAD, QCAD, Inkscape, and FreeCAD, which all run on macOS.
Does the viewer work on Apple silicon Macs?
Yes. It runs in the browser, so M-series and Intel Macs work the same way.
How do I view DXF files on Mac without uploading them?
Use this page. The file is read in the Safari tab and never sent to a server.
Can I convert DXF to PDF on a Mac?
Yes. Open the DXF here and choose Export PDF, or print and pick Save as PDF in the macOS dialog.
