How to edit a DXF file
To edit a DXF file you need a DXF editor such as LibreCAD, QCAD, FreeCAD, or Inkscape, depending on whether the file is a technical drawing or a cutting outline. This site does not edit; it opens the DXF in your browser so you can check the drawing before and after you change it.
Choose a DXF editor for the job
| Editor | Best for | Platforms | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LibreCAD | 2D technical drawings | Windows, macOS, Linux | Open source, works natively in DXF, familiar layer and snap tools |
| QCAD | 2D drawings, part outlines | Windows, macOS, Linux | Community edition edits DXF; paid version adds DWG and more tools |
| FreeCAD | Parts that start as 3D models | Windows, macOS, Linux | Draft workbench edits 2D; export DXF from sketches and drawings |
| Inkscape | Signs, logos, laser and vinyl artwork | Windows, macOS, Linux | Imports and saves DXF; thinks in paths, not CAD entities |
| Commercial CAD | Daily professional work | Varies | AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight and others read and write DXF fully |
Online DXF editors exist too. They are handy on a borrowed computer, but most upload the file, and their tools are basic.
Edit a DXF in LibreCAD, step by step
- Open LibreCAD and use File > Open to load the DXF. If the screen is blank, press the zoom-auto button to fit the drawing.
- Check the units in Edit > Current Drawing Preferences before measuring anything. DXF files from laser software often arrive unitless.
- Use the layer list on the right to lock layers you must not touch, such as a border or a supplier's dimensions.
- Edit with the Modify tools: move, trim, offset, and scale. Snap to endpoints and centers so edited lines stay connected.
- Save with File > Save As and pick the DXF version. Use R12 for older CNC and laser software, 2007 or newer for current CAD.
Keep the original file. DXF editors rewrite the whole file when saving, and some entity types, such as custom objects from vertical CAD products, can be dropped by a program that does not understand them.
How to create a DXF file from scratch
Making a new DXF file is a normal save in any of the editors above: start a drawing, set the units first, draw, and save as DXF. A few habits make the file easy to use by whoever receives it:
- Draw at real size, 1 unit equal to 1 mm or 1 inch, never scaled to fit a sheet.
- Close every outline that will be cut. An open contour is the most common reason a cutting job fails.
- Put cut lines, engraving, and dimensions on separate layers.
- Convert text to outlines if it must be cut or engraved, since DXF does not carry fonts.
For artwork that starts as a picture, tracing comes before editing; see JPG to DXF. For a 3D part, see STEP to DXF.
Small fixes without a CAD program
An ASCII DXF is plain text, so tiny fixes can be made in a text editor. Renaming a layer, for example, means replacing its name after group code 8 everywhere it appears. That is fine for a one-word change in a small file and risky for anything else: one misplaced line breaks the file. Binary DXF files cannot be edited this way.
If what you really need is a different format rather than an edit, the DXF converter page lists every direction.
Check the DXF before and after editing
Drop the original on dwgviewer.app to see its layers and measure key distances, then drop the edited file and compare. The entity count in the status bar is a quick sanity check: if it fell from 2 000 to 300 after a small edit, the editor dropped something it did not understand. Both files are read in your browser and neither is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
Which program can edit DXF files?
LibreCAD and QCAD for 2D drawings, FreeCAD for parts from 3D models, and Inkscape for signs and laser artwork. Commercial CAD programs edit DXF fully.
How do I create a DXF file?
Start a drawing in any of those editors, set the units, draw at real size, and save as DXF. Use R12 for older cutting machines.
Is there an online DXF editor?
Yes, several web editors handle simple changes. Most upload the file, so avoid them for confidential drawings.
Can I edit a DXF file in a text editor?
Only small changes in ASCII DXF, such as renaming a layer. Binary DXF and larger edits need a CAD program.
Why did my edited DXF lose objects?
The editor did not understand some entity types and dropped them on save. Keep the original and compare entity counts.
Can dwgviewer.app edit DXF files?
No. It opens, measures, prints, and exports DXF and DWG files. Use it to check a file before and after you edit it elsewhere.
