Free DXF viewer: open DXF files online

This free DXF viewer opens ASCII and binary DXF files from any AutoCAD version in your browser, with no account, no watermark, and nothing uploaded. It also opens DWG. Layers, measure, print, and PDF, SVG, and PNG export are included.

A free DXF viewer that reads ASCII and binary DXF

DXF is Autodesk's drawing exchange format: the same entities as a DWG, written as tagged text (or in a compact binary variant) so that any CAD program can read it. That is why laser cutters, CNC software, plotters, embroidery tools, and GIS packages all export DXF. This viewer parses both ASCII and binary DXF from any version, from R12 files produced by old plotting software to the current 2018 format.

Binary DXF is rarer but shows up from some CAM and GIS exporters; it carries the same data in a smaller, faster-to-parse form. When another tool refuses a DXF, the usual cause is that it reads only ASCII DXF or only R12. This viewer accepts both forms and all versions.

Because DXF is the viewer's native language, there is no conversion step for it: DWG files are converted to DXF first, DXF files are rendered directly. What is a DXF file covers the format, and DXF versions explains the R12 question.

What you can do in the free DXF viewer

Pan, zoom, and fit; show or hide layers; measure the distance between two points; print through the browser; export the current view as PNG, or the whole drawing as vector SVG or PDF on an A-series page. Light and dark themes are available, and the status bar reports the entity count, which is handy for spotting a DXF that saved empty. Export PNG captures what is on screen at the current zoom, so zoom in first if you want a detail at full resolution; SVG and PDF export the whole drawing as vectors regardless of zoom.

There is also a Chrome extension, 'DXF Viewer', that opens .dxf links directly from a web page instead of downloading them. It is DXF only; DWG support in the extension has not shipped.

Check DXF files from laser cutters, CNC, and pattern sites before you cut

A large share of 'free DXF' searches are people downloading patterns, signs, and templates for laser cutting or plasma tables. The disappointments are predictable: the file is in inches when the machine expects millimeters, the design has open contours, or a layer meant for engraving is mixed with the cut layer. A viewer catches most of this in a minute.

Measure a known dimension to confirm units, toggle layers to see what is on which, and fit to view to make sure there is no stray entity far from the design that would send the machine across the bed. If the file needs fixing, edit DXF online lists free editors, and for turning a PDF or image into DXF see PDF to DXF and PNG to DXF; neither conversion happens in this viewer.

View a DXF file online free in three steps

  1. Open this page in any modern browser on a desktop, tablet, or phone.
  2. Drop the .dxf on the drop zone or click to pick it.
  3. Fit, toggle layers, measure, and print or export.

For DXF-first guides, converters, and version notes, the sister site dxfviewer.app runs the same engine and goes deeper on the format.

Privacy and limits

Nothing is uploaded; the DXF is read by JavaScript in the tab and discarded when you close it. That is appropriate for product templates and fabrication drawings that you are not supposed to share. The viewer does not edit or save DXF, does not write DWG, and does not open DWF. For DWG files the limits are R14 and newer and 60 MB; DXF files have no version restriction. DXF from CNC post-processors can be large because every arc is split into short line segments; those still open, but a phone may run short of memory on them, so use a laptop for files above a few tens of megabytes. For the other side of the format pair, see free DWG viewer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I view DXF files for free?

Drop the .dxf on this page. It renders in the browser with no account, download, or watermark. LibreCAD and QCAD are free desktop alternatives if you also want to edit.

Is there a free Autodesk DXF viewer?

Yes: DWG TrueView (Windows) and the Autodesk Viewer website both open DXF for free with an Autodesk account. This viewer does the same without an account.

Can I convert PDF to DXF here for free?

No. This viewer reads DXF and DWG; it does not vectorize PDFs. See PDF to DXF for tools that do.

Does it open DXF R12 files?

Yes. DXF opens from any version, including R12. The R12 limitation applies only to DWG files, which open partially.

Where do I download free DXF files?

This site is a viewer, not a pattern library. Manufacturer libraries, maker communities, and laser-cutting pattern sites offer free DXF downloads; check them here before cutting.

Does the free DXF viewer work on Mac and phones?

Yes. It runs in Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, and on iPhone, iPad, and Android for small and medium files.
