Convert DXF to PDF online

Drop the DXF file below, click Export, then PDF, and the drawing is saved as a vector PDF on a white page sized to the area you select, with every line, arc, and dimension as drawn. ASCII and binary DXF from any AutoCAD version are read; nothing is uploaded, the file stays in your browser tab.

Drop a DWG or DXF file hereor click to choose. Opens in the viewer on this site, nothing is uploaded.DWG R14–2018+, DXF ASCII or binary, up to 60 MB. Private: the file stays in this browser tab.

How to convert a DXF file to PDF format

DXF is the open, text-based exchange format of AutoCAD, so almost everything can read it; the viewer reads it natively, without the DWG conversion step. That makes DXF to PDF the simplest conversion on this site.

  1. Drag the .dxf onto the drop zone above. Any version works, from R12 DXF written by a laser-cutter tool to a 2018+ file from AutoCAD.
  2. Check the drawing: Fit to drawing shows the full extents; the layers panel switches layers off if the PDF should not show them (hidden layers are excluded).
  3. Click Export, then PDF, and select the area: drag a rectangle over the part you want, or take the whole drawing.
  4. The PDF is written on your device and downloaded by the browser: vector geometry in layer colors on a white page.
  5. For a paper copy or a printer-specific PDF, use Print; it opens the browser print dialog.

Files that fail usually have a damaged header or were renamed from another format; fixing a DXF that will not open lists the checks. For the format itself, see what a DXF file is.

DXF to PDF with dimensions and scale

Two things people search for together: will the dimensions show, and will the PDF be to scale. The answers are different.

Dimensions are entities in the DXF, so they are drawn in the PDF with their lines, arrows, and text. The dimension text uses a substitute font if the original was an AutoCAD SHX font, which affects looks, not values. One caveat: a DXF exported from some non-CAD tools has dimensions pre-exploded into lines and text, and those come through as plain geometry, which is fine for reading.

Scale is fit-to-page in the viewer: the selected area fills a custom page whose proportions match the selection, with the longest side at 1500 pt (about 53 cm) and an 18 pt margin. It is not an A4 or A3 sheet and not a stated scale. That is correct for review and for most sharing. For a PDF that measures true, 1:1 for a template or 1:100 for a plan, you need a tool with a print-scale setting:

  • LibreCAD: File → Print Preview, set the scale in the toolbar, then print to PDF.
  • QCAD: the same, plus command-line dwg2pdf with a scale flag in the Professional edition.
  • AutoCAD or DWG TrueView: PLOT with a paper size, a scale, and the DWG To PDF plotter.

Always verify one dimension on the printed sheet with a ruler; a “fit to page” checkbox left on in the PDF reader undoes any scale you set upstream.

DXF to PDF in Python

For automation, ezdxf is the standard Python library. Its drawing add-on renders a DXF with matplotlib, which writes PDF directly:

import ezdxf, matplotlib.pyplot as plt
from ezdxf.addons.drawing import RenderContext, Frontend
from ezdxf.addons.drawing.matplotlib import MatplotlibBackend
doc = ezdxf.readfile("plan.dxf")
fig = plt.figure(); ax = fig.add_axes([0, 0, 1, 1])
Frontend(RenderContext(doc), MatplotlibBackend(ax)).draw_layout(doc.modelspace())
fig.savefig("plan.pdf")

Set the figure size in inches to get a specific paper size, and use a fixed axis range if you need a true scale. The same script with savefig("plan.png", dpi=300) gives a raster, which is how most DXF to PNG batches are done.

Batch convert DXF to PDF

Wrap the Python snippet in a loop over a folder and you have a batch converter that runs on any OS. Without Python: QCAD's dwg2pdf accepts directories; AutoCAD's PUBLISH takes a list of drawings and writes one PDF per sheet or one multi-page PDF; LibreCAD has no batch mode. For a handful of files, dropping each one here is quicker than any setup, and the files never leave the machine.

Need the reverse, a PDF back into a DXF? That is vectorization, not conversion: see PDF to DXF. For deeper DXF-only topics, the sister site dxfviewer.app runs the same engine.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a DXF file to PDF?

Open the DXF in the viewer above and click Export, then PDF. Select the whole drawing or a rectangle; it is written as a vector PDF on a white page sized to that area, without uploading the file.

Does the PDF keep the dimensions?

Yes. Dimensions are drawn as in the DXF, including the values. Only the font may change if the original used an AutoCAD SHX font.

How do I convert DXF to PDF at a specific scale?

Use a tool with a print scale: LibreCAD or QCAD print preview, or AutoCAD PLOT. The viewer's PDF is fit to a custom page, not plotted to a scale.

Is there a free DXF to PDF converter?

Yes. This viewer is free and runs in the browser; LibreCAD and QCAD Community are free desktop options with scale control.

Can I convert DXF to PDF in Python?

Yes, with ezdxf's drawing add-on and matplotlib: render the modelspace to a figure and call savefig("out.pdf"). See the snippet above.

Can I batch convert DXF files to PDF?

Yes: loop the ezdxf script over a folder, use QCAD's dwg2pdf, or AutoCAD PUBLISH. The viewer converts one file at a time.
