DWG viewer for Mac: open DWG files without AutoCAD

This DWG viewer for Mac opens AutoCAD DWG and DXF files in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox on macOS, with nothing to install and no AutoCAD license. The drawing is converted and rendered on your Mac, not on a server. It behaves the same on Apple Silicon and Intel machines.

Drop a DWG or DXF file hereor click to choose. Opens in the viewer on this site, nothing is uploaded.DWG R14–2018+, DXF ASCII or binary, up to 60 MB. Private: the file stays in this browser tab.

Why Preview and Quick Look can't open a DWG

macOS ships with Preview for PDFs and images, and Quick Look for a quick peek at most documents. Neither understands DWG. A .dwg is a binary CAD database with entities, layers, blocks, and layouts, and Apple has never shipped a reader for it, so a DWG attachment shows a generic icon and double-clicking it offers to search the App Store.

The usual advice is to install something: AutoCAD for Mac, BricsCAD, or a third-party viewer. That is fine if you open drawings every day. If you need to check one file a contractor sent, a browser is enough.

The same applies to iWork and Microsoft Office on the Mac: none of them import DWG, though Keynote and PowerPoint will happily place the PDF or SVG you export from this viewer.

A DWG viewer for Mac that runs in Safari

The viewer is a web page. It reads the DWG with LibreDWG compiled to WebAssembly, converts it to DXF inside the tab, and draws it with a WebGL renderer. Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on macOS all support both technologies, so there is no plug-in and no download beyond a 9 MB module the first time you open a DWG in a session.

Because the work is done by your Mac's own processor, a MacBook Air with an M-series chip opens a typical 1–20 MB drawing in a few seconds. There is no Rosetta involved and no separate build for Intel and Apple Silicon; the browser handles that.

What you get once the drawing is open

Pan with a drag, zoom with the trackpad or scroll wheel, and fit the whole drawing with one click. A layers panel lets you hide anything you do not need, which is the fastest way to read a crowded floor plan. A measure tool reports the distance between two points in the drawing's units.

For output you can print through the standard macOS print dialog, export the current view as PNG, or export the whole drawing as vector SVG or PDF on an A-series page. A dark theme is there for late-night work, and the status bar shows how many entities loaded.

If you are coming from AutoCAD, expect no command line and no object selection, because the viewer only reads. Safari may ask whether to allow downloads from the site the first time you export; that is its normal prompt for any file generated in the browser.

Open a DWG on a Mac in three steps

  1. Open this page in Safari or any other browser on your Mac.
  2. Drag the .dwg from Finder onto the drop zone, or click it and choose the file. Files in iCloud Drive work the same once they are downloaded locally.
  3. Fit to view, toggle layers, measure, and print or export as needed.

If the file arrived by email, save the attachment to Downloads first; dragging straight out of Mail sometimes hands over a reference rather than the file. More Mac-specific tips are in how to open a DWG file on a Mac.

Supported files and limits on macOS

DWG from AutoCAD R14 through 2018 and newer opens (internal versions AC1014 through AC1032); DXF opens in ASCII or binary form from any version. DWG R12 and older load only partially, DWG files over 60 MB are skipped to protect browser memory, and DWF or DWFX files are not supported. Nothing on this page writes a DWG, so it is not a replacement for AutoCAD for Mac when you need to save changes.

For DXF-only work on a Mac, the DXF viewer for Mac page covers the same engine from the DXF side, and DXF vs DWG explains when each format shows up.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a DWG file on a Mac without AutoCAD?

Yes. Open this page in Safari and drop the file on it; no AutoCAD, no install, no account. BricsCAD Shape and Autodesk Viewer are other free options.

Does macOS have a built-in DWG viewer?

No. Preview and Quick Look do not read DWG, so you need either a browser viewer like this one or an installed CAD app.

Is there a free DWG viewer for Mac?

This browser viewer is free with no account. Autodesk Viewer (web, account required) and BricsCAD Shape (desktop) are also free on macOS.

Does the viewer work on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. It runs in the browser, which is native on M-series chips, so there is no Rosetta and no separate download for Intel versus Apple Silicon.

Can I download a DWG viewer for Mac from this site?

There is nothing to download; the viewer is a web page. If you want an installable app, BricsCAD Shape and QCAD are free desktop options for macOS.
