How to open a DWG file on Mac
The simplest DWG file reader for Mac is a browser tab: open dwgviewer.app in Safari or Chrome, drop the .dwg file, and it renders on your Mac without uploading anything. Preview and Quick Look cannot show DWG, and DWG TrueView is Windows only, so this guide lists what does work on macOS, free and paid.
Open DWG on Mac in the browser (free, no install)
- Open Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge and go to the Mac viewer page.
- Drag the DWG from Finder onto the drop zone, or click it and choose the file. If the DWG arrived by Mail or Messages, save it to Downloads first; dragging straight from the message preview does not always hand over the file.
- The first drawing of the session downloads a 9 MB WebAssembly module, then the file is converted to DXF locally and rendered with WebGL. Expect 1 to 10 seconds for a normal-size drawing.
- Use the trackpad to pan and pinch to zoom, or press fit to view. Toggle layers, measure distances, and export a PDF if you need to send the drawing on.
Supported input is DWG from AutoCAD R14 through 2018+ plus any DXF. R12 and older DWGs and files above 60 MB are the two cases it does not handle.
Why Preview will not open a DWG
macOS has no built-in DWG support. Preview, Quick Look and Finder thumbnails all skip .dwg files, and double-clicking one gives the no application set to open the document message. The reason is that DWG is a proprietary binary format with no public specification; Apple has never licensed a parser for it.
You have three routes: a browser viewer (this site), a native Mac CAD program that reads DWG, or converting the DWG to PDF on another machine. What a DWG actually contains, and why it is not a picture, is explained on what is a DWG file.
Free DWG reader for Mac: the native options
| App | Opens DWG natively | Edits | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DWG Viewer (browser) | Yes | No | Nothing uploaded; measure, layers, PDF/SVG/PNG export |
| BricsCAD Shape | Yes | Yes (3D modeling) | Free, macOS and Windows; opens and saves DWG |
| FreeCAD | Via ODA File Converter | Yes | Install the ODA converter for Mac, set its path in FreeCAD preferences |
| LibreCAD | No, DXF only | Yes (2D) | Convert DWG to DXF first with the ODA converter |
| QCAD | Professional edition | Yes (2D) | The free community build reads DXF |
| Autodesk Viewer (web) | Yes | No | Requires an Autodesk account; file is uploaded |
| AutoCAD for Mac | Yes | Yes | Autodesk's full editor on macOS, subscription |
Autodesk DWG TrueView, Bentley View and Autodesk Design Review do not have Mac versions. If a colleague recommends them, that is why they are missing here.
The ODA File Converter deserves a note of its own: it is a free command-line and GUI tool from the Open Design Alliance with a macOS build, and it converts DWG to DXF and back between any versions. It is the piece that makes FreeCAD and LibreCAD useful with DWG on a Mac, and on its own it is the simplest way to downgrade a 2018-format file for an older program.
For a one-off look, the browser is faster than installing anything. For regular drafting on a Mac, BricsCAD Shape or FreeCAD with the ODA converter are the free picks, and opening DXF on Mac widens the choice to LibreCAD.

If you are the one sending drawings, export a PDF: it opens in Preview on any Mac and keeps the vector lines sharp. Drop the DWG into the viewer, hide the layers the recipient does not need, and use Export PDF. The PDF comes out on an A-series page as vector geometry, which prints cleanly. The same flow with more detail is on DWG to PDF.
Troubleshooting DWG on macOS
- Safari reloads the tab on a big file. Safari limits memory per tab more tightly than Chrome. Try Chrome or Firefox, or purge the drawing on a Windows machine before sending it.
- The file is named .dwg but will not open anywhere. Check it with a text editor: a real DWG starts with
AC10. ZIPs and PDFs renamed to .dwg are common in email attachments. See fix a DWG that will not open. - Text shows as boxes or odd shapes. AutoCAD SHX fonts are not on the Mac, so viewers substitute. The geometry is unaffected.
- FreeCAD says it cannot import DWG. The ODA File Converter is not installed or its path is not set under Preferences > Import-Export > DWG.
- Finder opens .dwg with the wrong app. Select the file, press Command-I, change Open with and click Change All. Browser viewers cannot register as a Finder handler, so keep a native app for double-click if you want one.
Frequently asked questions
What program opens DWG files on Mac?
The browser viewer on this site, BricsCAD Shape, FreeCAD with the ODA converter, Autodesk Viewer online, and AutoCAD for Mac. Preview and Quick Look do not open DWG.
Is there a free DWG reader for Mac?
Yes. dwgviewer.app runs in Safari or Chrome with nothing uploaded, and BricsCAD Shape is a free native app that opens DWG. Both are free.
How do I open a DWG file on Mac free without AutoCAD?
Open the site in your browser and drop the file; no account or install is needed. If you need to edit, use BricsCAD Shape or FreeCAD.
Can I open a DWG on an iPad or iPhone?
The same browser viewer works in Safari on iOS for small and medium files. Large drawings may run out of memory on a phone; see open DWG on iPhone.
Does DWG TrueView run on a Mac?
No. DWG TrueView is Windows only. Use the browser viewer or Autodesk Viewer online for a free reader on macOS.
