Convert DWF to DWG: what really works

To convert DWF to DWG you can attach the DWF in AutoCAD and trace it, or run a third-party converter that rebuilds geometry from the published sheet; neither returns the original drawing, and the best fix is to ask for the DWG it was published from. This viewer does not read DWF and never writes DWG, so this page is a straight guide to the options and their limits.

Why DWF to DWG is a reconstruction, not a conversion

A DWF is the CAD equivalent of a PDF: the author plotted selected sheets from a DWG into a compact, view-only package. Blocks were exploded into their lines, dimensions became lines and text, hatches became fills, 3D became a shaded snapshot or a lightweight mesh, and model-space coordinates were replaced by sheet coordinates at plot scale. What was intentionally left out cannot be put back by software.

So every "DWF to DWG converter" is really a tracer: it reads the sheet's lines and text and writes them into a DWG as plain geometry. You get something editable, on one layer or a few, in paper units, without the intelligence of the original. That is useful for a quick edit or a background reference, and useless as a replacement for the source. The format itself is explained on what is a DWF file.

How to convert DWF to DWG in AutoCAD with DWFATTACH

  1. Start a new drawing with the units of the original (UNITS), or open the drawing that should receive the geometry.
  2. Type DWFATTACH, select the DWF or DWFx, and pick the sheet. Insert at 0,0, scale 1, rotation 0.
  3. Scale the underlay to real size: SCALE with the Reference option, clicking the two ends of a dimension you can read and typing its value. A DWF published at 1:100 needs a factor of 100 if the drawing units are the same as the sheet units.
  4. Turn on object snapping to the underlay (DWFOSNAP set to 1). You can now snap to endpoints and intersections of the published lines.
  5. Create layers and draw over the underlay with LINE, PLINE, CIRCLE, and real dimensions. Use the underlay's layer list (Underlay Layers in the ribbon) to hide what you do not need.
  6. Type text and insert blocks rather than tracing their outlines.
  7. When finished, detach the underlay in the External References palette and SAVEAS DWG.

This gives a smaller, cleaner result than any automatic converter, because you rebuild the drawing the way it should be built. AutoCAD LT supports DWFATTACH as well.

Third-party converters, markups, and 3D DWF

AutoDWG DWF to DWG Converter, AnyDWG, and a few similar tools read 2D DWF and DWFx and write every line, arc, and text string into a DWG, with sheet layers mapped to DWG layers when the DWF kept them. They are paid, with trials that limit output. Expect text to come back as text (DWF keeps it), dimensions as plain lines and text, hatches as filled solids or many lines, and everything in paper units unless you scale it. Try the trial on your file and look at the entity count before buying.

If the DWF came back from a reviewer with clouds and comments, you do not want a DWG of the DWF at all. Open the original DWG in AutoCAD, open the Markup Set Manager (MARKUP), load the DWF, and the markups appear on top of the real drawing, where they can be addressed and marked done.

A 3D DWF or DWFx holds tessellated surfaces for display, not solids. No converter rebuilds parametric or solid geometry from it. Ask for a STEP, SAT, or native model and see STEP to DWG for the rest.

What to check after conversion

  • Scale and units. Measure a known dimension; converted DWFs are typically at plot scale in paper units.
  • Layers. If everything is on layer 0, sort by color before sharing; the DWF layer names may be available in the converter options.
  • Text. Should be text objects, not outlines; if it is outlines, the DWF was published with text as geometry.
  • Entity count. A sheet that converts into 200,000 entities had hatches exploded; delete and re-hatch.

Drop the resulting DWG onto dwgviewer.app to measure, count entities, and inspect layers without CAD; the file is read in your browser tab and never uploaded. If you only need to read the DWF itself, how to open a DWF file covers the free readers, and DWF to PDF covers the printable route.

Frequently asked questions

Can you convert DWF to DWG?

Partly. A DWF is published output; you can trace it in AutoCAD with DWFATTACH or run a third-party converter to recover flat lines and text, but blocks, dimensions, and model-space data do not come back.

How do I convert DWF to DWG in AutoCAD?

DWFATTACH the sheet as an underlay, scale it by reference, turn on DWFOSNAP, and draw over it. AutoCAD has no command that turns a DWF into editable geometry directly.

Is there a free DWF to DWG converter?

Not a reliable one. The AutoCAD underlay method works with AutoCAD LT, and paid converters such as AutoDWG offer limited trials. Asking the author for the DWG is free and better.

Can I convert a 3D DWF to DWG?

Only as display meshes at best. 3D DWF stores tessellated surfaces, not solids; request the original model in STEP, SAT, or native format.

Can I convert DWFx to DWG?

The same methods apply: DWFATTACH accepts DWFx, and the third-party converters read it. DWFx is the XPS-based version of DWF with the same content.

Does this viewer open DWF files?

Not yet. dwgviewer.app opens DWG and DXF. Use Autodesk Design Review for DWF.
