Convert DWG to JPG online

Drop the DWG file below, click Export, then PNG, and save the result as JPG in any image app; the viewer writes a lossless PNG of the area you select, 3000 pixels on the longest side, and leaves the lossy compression step to you, so you control the quality. Nothing is uploaded: the drawing is rendered in your browser tab.

Drop a DWG or DXF file hereor click to choose. Opens in the viewer on this site, nothing is uploaded.DWG R14–2018+, DXF ASCII or binary, up to 60 MB. Private: the file stays in this browser tab.

How to convert a DWG file to JPG

There is no separate JPG button in the viewer, and that is deliberate. JPG is a lossy format, and the quality setting belongs where you can see the result. The route is: export PNG, save as JPG.

  1. Open the .dwg in the drop zone above. AutoCAD R14 through 2018+ files open on the device, no account, no install.
  2. Hide noisy layers in the layers panel; hidden layers are left out of the export.
  3. Click Export, then PNG, and select the area: drag a rectangle over the detail, or take the whole drawing. The PNG is rendered on a white page in the real layer colors, 3000 pixels on the longest side.
  4. Open the PNG in any image app and save a copy as JPG: Windows Paint or Photos (Save as → JPEG), macOS Preview (File → Export → JPEG), GIMP, Photoshop, or a phone gallery. Set quality to 85–95 for line drawings.

If the JPG is for a document you will print anyway, consider exporting a PDF instead; it stays vector and prints sharper at any size.

JPG vs PNG for CAD drawings

JPEG compression was designed for photographs: smooth gradients, no hard edges. A CAD drawing is the opposite, thin dark lines on a flat background, which is exactly where JPEG artifacts show up as gray halos and speckles around every line.

PNGJPG
CompressionLosslessLossy; quality 0–100
Thin lines and textPixel-exactHalos at low quality, fine at 90+
File size for a line drawingSmall (flat areas compress well)Often larger than PNG at high quality
TransparencySupported by the format (the viewer's PNG is opaque white)Not supported
Where it is requiredDocuments, wikis, slidesSome upload forms, CMS, marketplaces, email clients, older systems

Rule of thumb: keep the PNG as the master and make a JPG only when a system demands one. If a site accepts both, send the PNG. When you do make a JPG, use quality 90 or higher and do not re-save a JPG as JPG; each round adds artifacts.

DWG to JPG in high resolution

The pixel count of the image is set at the PNG step, since the JPG is only a re-encoding. The viewer's PNG is always 3000 pixels on the longest side, independent of your screen, so the lever is the selection: export the area people need rather than the entire sheet, and make two exports for two details. The DWG to PNG page goes through this in detail.

For a JPG with a fixed pixel size, such as 4000 pixels wide for a print shop, use AutoCAD's PLOT with the “PublishToWeb JPG.pc3” plotter, where the paper size is given in pixels, or the JPGOUT command for a quick screen-resolution shot. DWG TrueView offers the same plotter without an AutoCAD license.

Other ways to convert AutoCAD DWG to JPG

  • AutoCAD: JPGOUT (select objects, save) or PLOT to PublishToWeb JPG.pc3 with a custom pixel size. Layouts, plot styles, and line weights are honored.
  • DWG TrueView: free Windows viewer from Autodesk with the same plot-to-JPG route.
  • LibreCAD: open a DXF, File → Export → Export as image, choose JPG and a size. Needs DWG to DXF first.
  • QCAD Professional: dwg2bmp on the command line writes JPG, PNG, or BMP from DWG and DXF, with width or resolution flags, and it works on folders.
  • Converter freeware and web services: AutoDWG, CloudConvert, Zamzar and others convert DWG to JPG; the web ones upload the file, which is the difference from the viewer here.

For a batch of drawings, an AutoCAD script that opens each file and plots to the JPG plotter is the standard answer; dwg2bmp is the standard answer without AutoCAD.

When JPG is the wrong format

A JPG is a picture of the drawing; it cannot be measured, edited, or re-layered, and it blurs when enlarged. If the person asking for a JPG actually wants to view the drawing, sending the DWG with a link to a free DWG viewer gives them zoom, layers, and measurement. If they want to print it, a PDF is lighter and sharper. If they want to trace it or cut it, an SVG keeps the vectors. JPG wins when the destination only accepts photos: a web form, a listing, a chat app that recompresses everything anyway.

Converting in the opposite direction, from a JPG back into a drawing, means tracing raster pixels into lines; see JPG to DWG.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert DWG to JPG without AutoCAD?

Open the DWG in the viewer above, export a PNG, and save it as JPG in Paint, Preview, GIMP, or any image app. Or install the free DWG TrueView and plot to the PublishToWeb JPG.pc3 plotter.

Why is there no direct JPG export?

Because JPG is lossy and the quality setting matters for thin lines. The viewer writes a lossless PNG; you pick the JPG quality when saving. The result is the same image with no hidden compression.

How do I get a high resolution DWG to JPG?

The viewer's PNG is 3000 pixels on the longest side, so select only the area you need to get more detail per pixel. For a fixed pixel size, plot from AutoCAD or DWG TrueView to the JPG plotter.

Can I print DWG to JPG from AutoCAD?

Yes. PLOT, choose PublishToWeb JPG.pc3 as the printer, set a paper size in pixels, and plot. JPGOUT is the quick alternative at screen resolution.

Is the DWG to JPG conversion free and online?

Yes, free with no sign-up or watermark. It runs in the browser without uploading the drawing.
