Convert PDF to DWG: what actually works
You can convert PDF to DWG, but the right method depends on whether the PDF is vector or a scan, and this site does not do it: dwgviewer.app opens DWG and DXF files in the browser and never writes a .dwg. Below are the ways that work, from AutoCAD's built-in import to free tools, and how to check the result afterwards.
Vector PDF or scanned PDF: check this first
A PDF exported from AutoCAD, Revit, or any CAD program still contains lines, arcs, and text as vector objects. A PDF made with a scanner or a phone camera contains only pixels, even if it looks like a crisp drawing. The two need completely different tools, so check before you pick a converter.
Open the PDF in any reader and zoom to 800 percent. If lines stay sharp and you can select text with the cursor, it is a vector PDF. If edges turn into gray staircases and nothing is selectable, it is a scan, and you need raster-to-vector tracing rather than a converter.
Which method for which case
| Your situation | Use this | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Vector PDF, AutoCAD 2017 or newer (LT included) | PDFIMPORT inside AutoCAD | Editable lines, arcs, TrueType text, optional layers |
| Vector PDF, no AutoCAD | Inkscape import, save as DXF, then DXF to DWG | Geometry on one layer, text as text or paths |
| Many pages or many files | pdf2cad, Able2Extract, AutoDWG PDF to DWG Converter | Batch output, line types and layers recognized |
| Scanned PDF | Scan2CAD, WinTopo, AutoCAD Raster Design, Inkscape Trace Bitmap | Traced lines that need cleanup |
| One-off, nothing confidential | Online converter (CloudConvert, Zamzar, AutoDWG online) | Quick, but the file is uploaded |
| You only need to see or measure it | Keep the PDF, or attach it as an underlay with PDFATTACH | No conversion needed |
How to convert PDF to DWG in AutoCAD with PDFIMPORT
- Start a new drawing with the right units (
UNITS) or open the drawing that should receive the geometry. - Type
PDFIMPORT, press Enter, and choose File (or click an already attached PDF underlay). - Select the PDF and the page. Leave scale at 1 and rotation at 0 for now; you will fix scale with a known dimension later.
- Under options, tick what you need: vector geometry, solid fills, TrueType text, raster images. For layers, choose "Use PDF layers" if the PDF came from AutoCAD, otherwise "Create object layers".
- Click OK. If text came in as outlines, run
PDFSHXTEXT(AutoCAD 2018 and later) to turn SHX outlines back into text objects. - Scale by reference:
SCALE, select all, pick two points on a dimension you know, type its real value. SAVEASand pick the DWG version your collaborators use; see DWG versions if you are unsure.
Free PDF to DWG converter options without AutoCAD
Inkscape is the most dependable free route. Use File > Import on the PDF (the Poppler/Cairo import keeps text as text; the internal import converts it to paths), check the result on screen, then File > Save As and choose "Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14)". Tick "use LWPOLYLINE type of line output" so curves become polylines every CAD program reads. The output is a DXF, not a DWG: convert it with the free ODA File Converter as described on DXF to DWG, or open the DXF directly in LibreCAD, BricsCAD, or any program that reads DXF.
Dedicated converters such as pdf2cad (Visual Integrity), Able2Extract, AutoDWG PDF to DWG Converter, and Print2CAD handle batches and multi-page PDFs, rebuild dashed line types, and usually map PDF layers. They are paid; trials normally watermark the output or limit the page count.
Online converters are fine for a one-off, non-confidential file. The trade-off is privacy: the PDF goes to a server you do not control, and free tiers often limit you to one page or a small file. Drawings under NDA belong in local software.
If your target program reads DXF, you can stop halfway: PDF to DXF covers that shorter chain.
Scanned PDF: raster to vector tracing
A scanned PDF has no lines to extract, so the software must guess them from pixels. This is vectorization, and Scan2CAD, WinTopo (a free edition exists), AutoCAD Raster Design, and Inkscape's Trace Bitmap all do it with very different quality.
Workflow: export the PDF page to PNG or TIFF at 300 dpi or more, clean the image (deskew, remove speckles, raise contrast), then trace. Centerline tracing gives single lines, which is what a drawing needs; outline tracing gives double lines and suits logos. Expect to redraw text, dimensions, and hatches by hand and to join broken segments. The image-specific steps are on PNG to DWG.
Honest expectation: a traced scan is a starting point, not a finished drawing. On a floor plan it saves perhaps half of the redraw time; on a dense piping diagram it may save none.
What gets lost, and how to check the result
- Layers. Kept only if the PDF was published with layers (AutoCAD's DWG To PDF.pc3 does that by default). Otherwise everything lands on one layer and you sort it by color or line weight.
- Text. TrueType text returns as text. SHX fonts are stored in the PDF as outlines, so they return as hundreds of tiny lines unless you run PDFSHXTEXT or use a converter with text recognition.
- Line types. Dashed lines are usually exploded into short segments. Some converters rebuild them; AutoCAD's PDFIMPORT does not.
- Blocks, dimensions, hatches. Lost as objects. Dimensions become lines and text, hatches become filled polygons or many lines.
- Scale. A PDF is stored in points at plot scale, so measure a known distance and scale the result.
To verify the DWG without opening CAD, drop it on dwgviewer.app: the layers panel shows how the converter sorted the geometry, the measure tool checks the scale, and the entity count in the status bar tells you whether a dashed line became 400 segments. Nothing is uploaded; the file is read inside the browser tab. More in how to open a DWG file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to DWG for free?
Import the PDF into Inkscape, save it as AutoCAD DXF R14, then convert the DXF to DWG with the free ODA File Converter. Both programs run on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
How do I convert PDF to AutoCAD without losing quality?
Only a vector PDF converts cleanly. Use PDFIMPORT in AutoCAD 2017 or later, keep PDF layers, run PDFSHXTEXT for text, then scale by reference using a known dimension.
Can AutoCAD convert PDF to DWG by itself?
Yes. Since AutoCAD 2017 the PDFIMPORT command imports vector geometry, fills, TrueType text, and raster images from a PDF page into the current drawing. AutoCAD LT has it too.
How do I insert an image or PDF into CAD instead of converting it?
Use IMAGEATTACH for PNG, JPG, or TIFF and PDFATTACH for PDF. The file becomes an underlay you can snap to and trace over, but it stays a picture, not editable geometry.
Are online PDF to DWG converters safe?
They work for non-confidential, one-off files. The drawing is uploaded to a third-party server, so for client work or anything under NDA use local software instead.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to DWG?
Only through raster-to-vector tracing (Scan2CAD, WinTopo, Inkscape Trace Bitmap). The output needs manual cleanup; text and dimensions are usually redrawn by hand.
How do I convert PDF to DWG on a Mac?
AutoCAD for Mac includes PDFIMPORT. Without AutoCAD, use Inkscape to produce a DXF and the macOS build of ODA File Converter to produce the DWG.
